Our Philosophy

According to many of our swim parents, the problem with other swim schools is that it’s very prescriptive: all swimmers in a lesson have to do exactly the same thing at the same time (regardless of whether they can already do it or not) and just get the same amount of support (or not) regardless of what they actually need. Progress is slow and the swimmers get upset or bored (and some, understandably, start messing about – I know, my son was one of those!). At Shark Squad we do it differently. Your child will be put in a group that best suits their ability and needs, but may be given slightly different practices to others in the group in order to challenge them at their own level.

There are no tick sheets, and if we judge that your child is ready to move up to the next class, they can do so immediately, there’s no wasting time waiting for the end of term. In addition to this we have lots of trained, friendly staff, and always more than we need for each lesson. This means that if a child needs extra support, for example with a specific skill, or generally, or to push them on, we can immediately put in an extra assistant to support them at no extra cost to you. In this way,

ALL swimmers benefit and everyone gets lots of swimming in every session because nobody is left behind and nobody is held back.

Oh, and one more thing: how a child feels about him or herself is absolutely at the centre of what we do. We make a real effort to get to know our swimmers so that our praise and encouragement is genuine and personal and there is lots of it!

We have found that children respond and progress so much better when they can see that their teacher is genuinely excited by their effort and achievement. They begin to truly believe in themselves and not only really enjoy their swimming experience but are motivated to improve.

We don’t do badges. Not one single child has ever asked us about a badge. We’ve found that children recognise and value their own achievements far more with positivity and praise from the teacher (and personal mentions to parents/carers) than with a paid-for badge handed over by a receptionist.
